Spare Room Makeover into Stunning Nursery /Flex Space
I think we all have one of those rooms where odd pieces of furniture, boxes and unused exercise equipment go to die. Let’s just call it the Room of Doom. It’s just a catch all for everything in your home that you don’t know what to do with. Well nothing like a new arrival to motivate you to finally tackle that room and make it into something fabulous and useful. The new arrival? My first grandbaby! Yay! I know I wanted to spend as much time with my grandbaby as possible so the goal was to create a LaLa’s nursery / office space for myself. I wanted to create an inviting and fresh space for Baby Caden to enjoy when I am babysitting, while still having a bright, airy space with a desk for my work. I knew I wanted a green accent wall and when I found Sherwin Williams ‘Greenfield’ I fell in love with it. I chose to do a simple vertical board and batten treatment that took my husband and I just a couple of hours to install and I painted it in the bold green.
I wanted a playful pattern on the small closet wall and found the most adorable polka dot wall decals (for under $10) that took 15 minutes to apply. The key was to make sure some of them bent around the wall edge and I cut a couple in half to have those appear to start at an edge. Super easy and inexpensive.
Now it was time for the fun part…decorating! The best way to show off that green was to place this simple white crib in front. This crib is called the Marley and I found it on Wayfair for under $200 with over 4000 five star reviews! Just order it already. The focal point is the wall and crib so I used a very neutral, flat-woven rug underneath it all. I also wanted something nice and smooth so a rocking chair would rock nicely on top of it. Speaking of rocking chairs, this incredible comfy, sherpa rocking chair with natural wood legs and rockers was a wonderful find on Amazon for under $100! It feels much more expensive. Caden and I both love it and give 2 thumbs up.
The natural wood, twig hooks kept the outdoorsy theme and the super, cute boho hanging baskets are not only fun, but handy for smaller toys. The olive green drapes are a rich green velvet that flank the sheers in the middle (right now they are under $40 a pair). The Sweet JoJo Designs crib dust ruffle with the fringe was a must have. I ordered the dark green but it also comes in other cute colors! I used a faux tree because nobody needs loose dirt and leaves around a toddler. Finally, the Monstera Leaf tummy time mat is my favorite part of the room and ties everything together so beautifully.
For my flex /office side of the room I incorporated this white desk with shelves above it. The great thing about this desk is how easily I can instantly convert it into a changing table by just placing a portable changing pad right on the desk. I have a little wooden organizer up top with baby essentials that are right in reach. When I am working, i simply leave the changing pad in the closet and use the desktop for my laptop, etc.
This space that used to be such an eyesore is now my favorite room in the house! Do you have a room of doom that you could turn into a hobby room, a workout space, a library or a bedroom for your dogs? Let’s get designing!
