Old Florida Condo Revamp!
Welcome! I’m glad you’re here! I am so thrilled to share the incredible transformation of this old Florida condominium into a luxurious and moody space. The journey started with a neglected, fire-damaged unit in Gulfport, FL that was in dire need of a fresh start. Of course I fell instantly in love with this hot mess and took on the challenge, gutted the space, and embarked on a renovation that would bring new life and style to this outdated gem.
One of the key elements of this remodel was the bold use of pattern and texture throughout the condo. I wanted to create a visually striking environment from the moment you step inside, because truthfully the outside of the condominium complex is not impressive! By carefully selecting a workable mix of interesting patterns I believed we could achieve a beautiful balance of sophistication and comfort.
Let's start with the kitchen, which underwent a remarkable transformation that you can see for yourself from the BEFORE photo below! What used to be a small, underutilized space with cramped cabinetry and unnecessary soffits is now a chef's dream. We opened up the kitchen and added a dining island (or technically a peninsula) with a waterfall countertop of Quartz in Calacatta Miraggio Gold (shoutout to Bayside Granite of St. Pete) and added a slat wood panel wall to the front of the bar area that is subtly lit from above with LED lighting. I balanced the smooth, hard countertop with overstuffed counter stools creating a seamless flow to the living area and bringing in that important element of comfort. A standout feature in the kitchen is the custom appliance garage, an absolute game-changer. Gone are the days of cluttered countertops and unsightly appliances. My husband created a stunning cabinet space where you can tuck away all those appliances, and you simply open the doors and push them back into the cabinet recess and they are ready for use. It's a practical yet visually appealing solution that adds to the overall aesthetic of the kitchen. Because we were able to tuck that microwave into the appliance garage, it allowed for a gorgeous, white custom range hood instead of the typical microwave over the stove that you see in the majority of condominiums. I must give credit to my amazingly talented husband who made every piece of the custom cabinetry and will probably never forgive me for insisting on that complicated appliance cabinet. But oh it was worth it! By going with a panel-ready dishwasher, we were able to keep the kitchen looking sleek and visually seamless from one end to the other, which is such an important consideration when working within small spaces. All of the cabinets stretch from floor to ceiling to maximize storage and functionality.
Moving on to the bathroom, we wanted to make it a true oasis. By relocating the linen closet, we were able to enlarge the space, giving it a sense of openness and tranquility. Black and white harlequin basalt tiles were chosen to create a timeless and elegant look. The custom white oak floating vanity adds a touch of warmth and sophistication, while the zero-entry glass shower done in white picket tile with black contrast grout also visually enlarges the shower. The real scene-stealer is the black basalt tile with inlaid gold metal accents behind the vanity. It created the perfect backdrop for this gorgeous, round gold medicine cabinet that not only looks fantastic, but as we all know when you are living in a small space you have to make every bit of storage area count. Not only is it giving luxe, but the depth and interest it brings to this vanity area is just amazing.
As you step into the living room, you cannot miss the bold feature wall. When I found the Ekena Millworks Decorative Fretwork I knew I wanted to incorporate that into the living space as a wall treatment. We painted the wall a deep grey ( Behr , Black Locust) and opted for the Cameron design (in Hickory) which our contractor installed over the painted wall and it instantly added a modern and interesting vibe to the entire room. The intricate pattern of the fretwork creates a focal point that draws the eye and sparks conversation. In order to transition the kitchen cabinetry into the living space we opted for a wine wall that caps the end of the cabinetry and opens to the living room. It is framed out with LED lighting which operates on a dimmer and honestly I can’t stop admiring it. To bring in that sense of comfort, I chose a cowhide rug and the Poly & Bark Nolita cognac leather sofa flanked by a concrete finish end table and a super soft creamy white barrel chair for additional seating and an oval, carved wood coffee table from World Market.
The overall result of the remodel was a luxuriously moody space that embraces both style and functionality. From the bold patterns and textures to the chef-inspired kitchen and the captivating living room feature wall, every corner of this condominium tells a story of transformation and excellent craftsmanship (shout out to my amazing contractor Chris Spatol of Spatol Homes and my talented woodworker and handsome husband Warren).
We hope you enjoyed this glimpse into our journey of turning this sad into a stunning and inviting retreat. I can’t wait to share the bedroom /walk- in closet makeover in my next post!
